Propane vs. electricity: No contest

It’s a fact: Not a single electric tankless water heater currently qualifies for Energy Star recognition. On the other hand, a number of propane tankless water heaters with an efficiency rating of 82 percent or more are on that list.

A tankless propane unit can cut your water heating bills by as much as 60 percent compared with a standard electric storage model, all while providing instant, on-demand hot water. Many propane tankless water heaters also qualify for tax credits and other incentives, which can pay for a portion of your installation costs. If you want a standard tank-type water heater, propane offers faster initial heat-up and a quicker recovery rate than electric storage water heaters can deliver.

Clean and green

Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency show that propane emits 52 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electricity. That’s why propane is an approved alternative fuel recognized by the Clean Air Act of 1990 and a qualifying alternative fuel eligible for various federal tax incentives under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
